Chief Environmental Strategist, Microsoft
Rob Bernard defines and implements Microsoft’s global environmental strategy. His vision touches all levels of the organization. He works with product development groups to innovate software and hardware technologies that reduce customers’ impact on the environment. He helps accelerate scientific breakthroughs on environmental issues. He strives to minimize Microsoft’s environmental impact through adoption of responsible business practices. Mr. Bernard’s influence also extends beyond the corridors of Microsoft. He engages industry, government, and other organizations worldwide to safeguard the environment.
Under Mr. Bernard’s leadership, Microsoft set its first carbon reduction goal. It also rolled out a global campaign to mobilize customers, partners, and governments to harness information technology in ways that make a difference for the planet.
Mr. Bernard speaks passionately about the role technology can play in enabling energy efficiency, democratizing access to environmental information, and advancing scientific breakthroughs. He has spoken at high-profile events, among them the Annual Meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative, the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP15) in Copenhagen, and The Wall Street Journal ECO:nomics forum for business and environmental leaders.
During his 14-year career at Microsoft, Mr. Bernard has held leadership roles in marketing, business, and technical management. He previously spent nearly a decade building and managing industrial and office properties. He earned an MBA from the Wharton School of Business and a Bachelor of Arts in English literature from Columbia University. Mr. Bernard lives with his family in Seattle.
