Building Sustainably
The research we will conduct for this project will consist of three parts. Our initial research will be finding which cities in the world are the greenest via Internet sources. Secondary research will consist of listing the most sustainable and green attributes/characteristics of said cities through Internet and literary sources that focus on individual cities from our list. The last step of research is to assess which sustainable characteristics are cost-effective/worth the effort it takes to implement them through research of news articles, Internet, and literary sources. As it is, the city of Curitiba (Brazil) has been a leading source of ideas concerning our design; its methods of public transit and recycling are influencing us a great deal.
Eco-School
Our project, called the “Eco-School” draws from the principles of environmental awareness and sustainability to design a western Washington middle or high school. It will include features such as light-efficient windows, hydrogen-powered school buses, a compost system to fuel the school, a cafeteria supplied by fruits and vegetables from the school gardens, a rainwater-collection system, and recyclable building materials.
