Using a second-hand racecar chassis from Washington State University’s Formula SAE club and batteries from an auto parts store, this two-brother team created a prototype for an electric-powered vehicle.

The students’ electric buggy could travel at speeds up to 40 miles per hour. It was outfitted with a gas generator, but consumed fossil fuel sparingly; the students estimated that the buggy could travel 112 miles on a gallon of gas. The greatest limitation of their vehicle was the three- to four-hour stretch required to recharge the batteries.
